How to Make Beer – Which Method Should You Choose?
There is no mistaking the quality and taste of fine home-brewed beer, it beats commercial brands hands down. But what is the best method of home brewing to achieve that result? Here are the main options and some key points to consider before deciding how to make beer yourself.
The ‘Traditional’ Way, or Kits?
Now, there are two main methods for making your own beer. You can go the traditional home brewing route and start with a number of ingredients that you have to prepare yourself, or you can use one of the newer home brewing kits that are now available.
Home brewing kits come with everything you need to start brewing quickly. All the ingredients required are provided ready-prepared, so you can save a lot of time and a lot of steps in the process. All you need do is mix the ingredients with water, place the cap on the fermenter, and let the yeast brew the beer. And soon enough it will be ready to bottle — and enjoy.
The more traditional home brewing method takes much longer and has many more steps. You need to intervene quite often in the process. You have to transfer from one container to another, add different ingredients at different times, and remove things from time to time. It’s a much longer and more difficult process than using ready-prepared malt kits.
Equipment and Cost
Of course, whether you go the traditional route or use malt kits you will have to purchase a certain amount of equipment. To use malt kits, you will buy a simple microbrewery kit in a box which gives you all the equipment you need. It is reasonably priced and completely reusable. And then you just buy individual malt kits as you wish for the different varieties of beer.
Because the traditional method involves more processes it inevitably requires more equipment and so has higher start-up costs. And purchasing the individual ingredients separately can also cost more than the ready-prepared malt kits.
Quality and Reliability
Now, the big test of any beer making method has to be the quality of the result. And surprisingly, perhaps, the kit method delivers superb quality. It doesn’t seem fair when you consider all the hard work that goes into brewing the traditional way, but it’s true — you can achieve the very best results with kits, and with ease.
And what is more, kits are very reliable. One of the problems with the traditional method is that the number of steps and processes involved means the chances of something going wrong are greatly increased. And of course that can spell disaster — a ruined brew and a lot of time and effort wasted, not to mention the expense.
Of course, if you are experienced with the traditional method and everything goes well, then the beer can be delicious. But if you are relatively new to it, then it can take quite a while to figure out exactly how to get the results you are looking for, and a lot of trial and error.
So, unless you are already a devotee of the traditional method, you will most probably choose to use kits for their simplicity, quality of result and reliability … delicious, first rate beer — time after time.
And, when you see for yourself just how easy it is to make such wonderful beer using kits, you will want to venture out and start trying some of the varieties available — there is no shortage — and of course you can even experiment with your own original blends and flavors if you wish.
